Ranches: I won’t take decision against Benue’s interests — Gov Alia

Benue State governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia has assured residents that any decision regarding the Federal Government’s proposed ranching programme in the state will be guided by the overall interest of the people.

The governor called for patience and careful deliberation on the proposal, warning against rushing to politicise the matter through public gatherings, churches, the media or markets.

Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula made the clarification in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Saturday.

Kula said the governor had never supported any position that would undermine the welfare and interests of Benue State, stressing that Alia was actively consulting with stakeholders and relevant authorities on the proposal.

He said, “Governor Hyacinth Alia is a steadfast democrat who remains conscious that his mandate is a product of the people’s will. 

“He has consistently maintained that every Benue person is a critical stakeholder in the collective effort to make the state great again.

“The governor has demonstrated on several occasions that he does not merely lead; he serves.

“Against this background, and in view of the Federal Government’s proposal to establish pilot ranches in some states, including Benue, there is a need for restraint and thoughtful consideration. 

“There is no need to take the issue to the streets, churches, media or marketplaces in a rush to politicise it.”

Kula further explained that the governor was carefully weighing the implications of the Federal Government’s plan before reaching a decision.

He added, “The governor is fully engaged on the matter and remains in consultation with the people and relevant authorities. 

“He will, as he has always done, approach the issue with careful consideration and strategic judgement, ensuring that the interests of Benue State and its people remain his foremost priority.

‎”It is not every issue that requires an immediate public pronouncement. Sometimes, measured deliberation produces better outcomes. 

“That is why patience and thoughtful engagement are necessary as the government considers the proposal and determines the best course of action for Benue.”
