Questions about Tait Reynolds, Clemson passing offense continue in loss to Virginia Tech

CLEMSON — Tait Reynolds completed his fifth career start in Clemson football’s return to ACC play against Virginia Tech.

The Tigers (4-3, 2-2 ACC) fell to the Hokies (6-2, 3-2) 20-16 on Oct. 24.

Questions remain about whether Reynolds can win games with his arm and whether Clemson‘s passing offense can be effective. Reynolds was 20-of-26, but passed for just 153 yards. The Tigers still haven’t thrown for a touchdown since Sept. 19 against North Carolina.

Clemson entered the game with the ACC’s worst passing offense and they were last in the nation with two touchdown passes.

Reynolds almost had his best throw of the season on what would’ve been a 26-yard completion to Bryant Wesco Jr. that put Clemson deep in Virginia Tech territory. It was a deep pass to the left sideline between two Hokies defenders.

However, the play was overturned to an incomplete pass after it was ruled that Wesco didn’t maintain possession. Reynolds was then sacked for a loss of 8 yards on fourth-and-9 to seal Clemson’s defeat.

Tait Reynolds highlights vs Virginia Tech

Reynolds recorded his first rushing touchdown as a Clemson player in the third quarter on a 16-yard dash. Reynolds looked left for a pass, didn’t like what he saw and burst through a hole on the right side to give Clemson its first lead in the game.

Reynolds also had two completions of more than 20 yards. One was for 22 yards to T.J. Moore in the third quarter on the drive that resulted in Reynolds’ rushing touchdown, and the other was for 27 yards to Tyler Brown on Clemson’s next drive. Brown broke tackles and gained considerable yards after the catch to put the Tigers in position to kick a field goal and go up 16-10 on the drive.
