Queiroz leaves Ghana role after World Cup elimination

Carlos Queiroz has left his role as Ghana’s head coach following their round-of-32 exit from the World Cup.

Queiroz was only appointed by the Black Stars in April, becoming just the second coach – after Bora Milutinovic – to appear at five successive World Cups.

The 73-year-old, who led his home nation of Portugal to the 2010 tournament and managed Iran at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions, oversaw Ghana’s best performance since reaching the quarter-finals in South Africa 16 years ago.

They escaped Group L as one of the best third-place finishers, courtesy of a 1-0 win over Panama and a goalless draw with England.

However, they were then eliminated in the round of 32 by Colombia, losing 1-0 in a game where they did not manage a single shot on target. 

Taking to social media to announce his departure on Sunday, Queiroz challenged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to build on the success his players enjoyed this year.

“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn,” he wrote on Instagram. 

“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. 

“Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. The Black Stars’ success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.

“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”
