The announcement sheds light on Coyne Schofield’s absence from the ice on Wednesday night, when Team USA faced off against Team Canada in Windsor, Ont. While named to the national team’s fall training camp rosters, Coyne Schofield, a staple of the U.S. program since 2011, did not dress for the game.
A four-time Olympian, Coyne Schofield won her second gold medal at the Milan Cortina Winter Games in February. She has won seven IIHF Women’s World Championships and established herself as one of the foundational figures in women’s professional hockey and a key player in the creation of the PWHL.
Coyne Schofield gave birth to her first child, son Drew, in July 2023. Six months later, she was back on the ice for the PWHL’s inaugural season in January 2024 as captain of the league’s Minnesota franchise. The team won the first Walter Cup championship, and then another in 2025. Individually, Coyne Schofield has been one of the very best players in the PWHL over the last three seasons. Only Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin and teammate Taylor Fox (née Heise) have scored more career points than Coyne Schofield’s 63 career points in 77 games, all scored with the Minnesota Frost since the PWHL’s inaugural season in 2024.
In August, Coyne Schofield signed a two-year contract extension to remain with the Frost through 2027-28.
“My first three seasons in Minnesota have been unforgettable for my family and me,” Coyne Schofield said in a news release. “We’re thrilled to be back for the next two seasons and can’t wait to return for Season Four. I’m ready to put in the work to bring the Walter Cup back to Minnesota.”
Under the PWHL Collective Bargaining Agreement, which Coyne Schofield helped negotiate as an instrumental member of the PWHL Players Association, she is entitled to salary protection and medical benefits throughout her pregnancy.
Coyne Schofield’s Minnesota club said “we can’t wait to welcome the newest member of the Frost family next year, and we’ll be here to support Kendall and her family in every way possible,” in a statement on Thursday night.

“Kendall means so much to our team, both on and off the ice,” the statement continued. “While we’ll miss seeing her compete this season, the leadership, experience and energy she brings to the Frost extends far beyond the game.”
