Since its theatrical release in March 2026, Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary has received a lot of praise from critics and audiences alike. With a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, the sci-fi pic is a recent standout in the genre.

From Ryan Gosling’s performance to Grace and Rocky’s friendship, the movie has many memorable moments. Great quotes and funny banter resonate well with fans.

While Rocky and Grace’s cross-species friendship takes most of the spotlight, the movie’s deeply human take on space adventure is what makes it special, and one line, in particular, is the heart of the movie. Project Hail Mary‘s wisest line isn’t in the loudest scene, but it happens to be one of the best lines in recent sci-fi history.

One Project Hail Mary Quote Defines The Entire Movie

Project Hail Mary‘s wisest quote comes fairly early in the movie. When Captain Yao assumed that Grace would join the mission if asked, Grace admitted that he would choose not to do it because he lacked courage. Captain Yao then told him that everyone is capable of courage, and they just need to find the person that makes them brave, which, in retrospect, is what the movie is about.

“Anyone can be brave. You just need someone to be brave for.” — Captain Yao

Grace spent the first half of the movie trying to decode the lives of his fellow crew. He admired their courage for giving their lives on Earth for the mission and felt the weight of the mission, but he didn’t fully understand the meaning of sacrifice until he met Rocky.

Gosling’s schoolteacher is far from what a brave man looks like on the outside. Unlike the other astronauts on his team, he said no to joining the mission and was involuntarily put into a coma so that he could make a much-needed continued contribution to the human race. His moment of bravery came later in the film when he chose to save Rocky instead of going back to Earth.

For Grace, saving humanity is a big concept that comes with responsibilities and commitment, which sounds like something that only heroes do, but saving Rocky is simple. All he had to do was show up. Captain Yao’s quote decodes big concepts such as heroism, sacrifices, and bravery into basic human experiences and ordinary courage that everyone is capable of. The fact that the line was delivered in a rather ordinary scene makes it even more meaningful.

While on the surface, Project Hail Mary tells a story about space adventures and making contact with extraterrestrial lifeforms; the movie investigates Grace’s relationship with courage. Captain Yao gave Grace the answer before the school teacher-turned-astronaut fully understood the meaning, and in doing so, it created a powerful echo effect.

The Project Hail Mary Quote Fits What Makes Sci-Fi Great

From 2001: A Space Odyssey to Jeremy Renner’s Arrival and the critically acclaimed Annihilation that stars Natalie Portman in the lead role, many of the best sci-fi flicks use speculative concepts to examine the human condition. Christopher Nolan’s epic sci-fi pic Interstellar uses the concept of a wormhole and time dilation to explore love and survival. Similarly, Project Hail Mary approaches time dilation and extraterrestrial life by asking what makes a person courageous and what makes life worth fighting for.

Project Hail Mary rejects the default assumption that only heroes rise to the occasion and that some of us are born courageous. Instead of offering a familiar speech about bravery, Captain Yao’s words make it personal.

Grace eventually found the person he’d be brave for in space. They may not speak the same language or come from the same planet, but they’re both the sole survival engineers on the same mission to save their planet, and they would do everything, including putting their lives at risk, to save one another.

Rocky and Grace’s friendship grounds the scientific aspects of Project Hail Mary in the very things that make human experiences meaningful, which are love, family, and friendship.
