Premier League star escapes injury after flipping car onto roof near training ground

Hull City have confirmed that new signing Sorba Thomas escaped “completely unscathed” after his vehicle overturned in a frightening accident.

Images circulating on social media on Friday revealed his Land Rover Defender inverted on a residential street, with a club staff member, believed to be manager Sergej Jakirovic, present at the location. The collision occurred around 9am BST (4am ET) on Millhouse Woods Lane, near Hull’s training facility.

The Tigers released a statement saying, via The Mirror: “Hull City is relieved to confirm that Sorba Thomas is unharmed following a road traffic accident near to the club’s Cottingham training ground.

“The club is aware of images of Sorba’s car circulating on social media and can reassure supporters that he has sustained no injuries and emerged from his vehicle completely unscathed.”

Humberside Police issued a statement: “Officers and emergency services are currently in attendance following reports of a road traffic collision on Millhouse Woods Lane, Cottingham at around 9am on Friday, 11 September 2026.

“The road remains closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area to allow emergency services to operate effectively.”

The collision took place on a quiet residential street with a 30mph speed restriction in Cottingham, situated on Hull’s outskirts, just a short distance from the club’s training complex. Thomas’ vehicle has since been towed, clearing Millhouse Woods Lane just in time for the Hull City team bus, which is transporting the squad to London ahead of their Premier League game against Chelsea on Saturday.

Local councilman Phil Redshaw visited the scene Friday morning, reporting that two parked vehicles, a blue Mini and a black 4×4, had also sustained damage.

He told The Mirror there have been “a few near misses” on the road recently, adding that trucks and coaches are routinely forced to mount the sidewalk to navigate past.

He continued: “I wrote to the Hull City club secretary on Sunday asking them to remind players to be careful driving down the road because of the residents’ concerns. I wanted them to remind their staff to drive with extra care, because they get new players in every season.”

Land Rover Defenders are a popular choice among professional footballers and can fetch up to £160,000 ($216,430).

Wales international Thomas joined The Tigers from Stoke on transfer deadline day for £10.5 million ($14.2 million). The 27-year-old winger has made two appearances for his new club, in the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League and the 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.

Hull are gearing up to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a 3pm BST (10am ET) Premier League kickoff on Saturday. Jakirovic’s side have made a stunning start to the campaign following their promotion through the Championship play-offs, defeating Manchester United and Coventry City before drawing with Aston Villa to sit third in the standings.

Jakirovic addressed the media regarding Thomas in his pre-match press conference on Thursday ahead of the trip to West London. “I don’t have any doubt about Sorba because he made a difference in the Championship,” he said.

“He is a left winger and we can use him inside like a left (sided) number 10. He knows football. He is very good in delivery and his end product is good. Also, he has very good set-pieces.

“He is sharp and has speed. Also, in defence, he is very responsible. I think he suits us a lot. Like always, I hope he can help us.”

Thomas claimed Stoke City’s Player of the Year award last season after racking up 10 goals and 13 assists across all competitions. His last-minute deadline day exit to Hull sparked considerable unrest at the club, prompting sporting director Jon Walters to issue a formal statement addressing the matter.

“Although we are naturally disappointed with the way it has ended after just one season, I do understand that Sorba had an opportunity to play in the Premier League which, over the past few days, he has expressed a firm desire to take,” he said. “We all thank him for his efforts last season and wish him well for the future.”
