The officials for Matchweek 1 of the Premier League have been announced, and Playmaker are here to quickly run you through the referees for each game.

With the Premier League’s opening fixtures now approaching, there are also a few refereeing changes for fans and players to get used to during the 2026/27 season.

The focus remains on keeping matches flowing, with officials encouraged to maintain a high threshold for fouls and VAR intervention. The Premier League also wants decisions to be made more efficiently, with improved semi-automated offside technology expected to help reduce lengthy delays.

Time-wasting is another major area of focus. Players who deliberately delay throw-ins or goal-kicks will face a five-second countdown, with further sanctions possible if they fail to restart play in time. Substituted players will also have 10 seconds to leave the pitch, or their replacement could be forced to wait before entering.

There is also a new trial involving goalkeeper injuries. If play is stopped because of a goalkeeper injury, the manager must nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for at least one minute after the restart. The idea is to prevent injury stoppages being used to slow the game down or allow tactical instructions.

VAR will also be able to review clearly incorrect second-yellow-card decisions that result in a red card.
