The New York Yankees have several important decisions to make this offseason, but what they do with David Bednar is a major one. After bringing stability to the ninth inning, the closer has made a strong case for another season in the Bronx.
Acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the 2025 trade deadline, Bednar had to navigate early velocity concerns and criticism following blown saves before becoming a central figure in New York’s bullpen.
Bednar converted 35 of 39 save opportunities in 2026, finishing with a 2.47 ERA and 76 strikeouts across 69.1 innings. He also delivered in the postseason, allowing no runs in three innings. His work helped settle a role that has often been a question mark for New York.

That production is why Bednar is a player the Yankees should prioritize re-signing. The Talkin’ Yankees show acknowledged the risks of committing multiple years to relievers, but argued that Bednar has earned the opportunity to remain the team’s bullpen anchor.
There is evidence to support that view. Since joining New York in 2025, Bednar has recorded a 2.39 ERA and 45 saves over 94 innings. He continued to evolve this season, leaning more on his splitter and holding hitters to a .149 average in at-bats that ended with the pitch. His control improved, too, as he posted a career-best 7.1% walk rate.
The biggest obstacle may be the cost. Bednar earned $9 million this season and is likely to attract interest from other teams. The Yankees could explore alternatives in free agency, but finding someone who can provide the same reliability will be difficult.

With other bullpen decisions still looming, bringing Bednar back would give New York a proven closer and remove one major concern from its offseason checklist.
