Portugal’s coach, Jorge Jesus, has dismissed ideas that Cristiano Ronaldo is a problem for the national team, describing the 41-year-old as the symbol for his country.

Jesus became the new head coach of Portugal on July 10 with a four-year contract, after the team’s 2026 campaign.

The 71-year-old had just left his position at Al-Nassr, where he helped Ronaldo win his first Saudi Pro League title last season.

“He will never be a problem for the national team or for me,” Jesus said to Canal 11, as reported by Foot Mercato.

“Everyone has the right to hold their own opinion on this issue. When the time comes to make a decision, I will talk one-on-one with Cristiano and with all the other players.

“Cristiano is a symbol of Portugal, and his name will be remembered forever in history. I enjoyed working with him a lot. I don’t judge players by their age, and that goes for Cristiano too.

Cristiano Ronaldo faced a lot of criticism during the 2026 World Cup, with many people saying he was too old to lead Portugal’s attack.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner celebrated their 41st birthday in February and scored only three goals in North America as Portugal was eliminated in the round of 16 after losing 1-0 to Spain.

Jesus had already supported Ronaldo’s place in the Portuguese team before taking charge of the Seleção.He said back then that he would not hesitate to pick the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star if he was playing at his best.
