Police condemn murder of woman forcefully taken from its custody in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the killing of a woman accused of kidnapping after being safely taken into police custody in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State.

This was revealed in a statement issued by police mouthpiece, DSP Mansir Hassan, on Sunday 21 June, 2026.

The police spokesman said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos received a distress call at about 10:00 a.m. that a woman was being attacked by a crowd over allegations of kidnapping.

The police said officers quickly moved to the scene, rescued the woman and took her to the station for her safety while investigations began.

However, the situation later turned violent when hundreds of people reportedly surrounded the police station, overpowered officers and forcefully took the woman away.

“Despite this, a crowd numbering in their hundreds later stormed and besieged the police station, overpowered the officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her and set her body ablaze,” the statement said.

The command described the act as barbaric, criminal and a direct assault on the rule of law, stressing that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.

Police said several suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack, while efforts were ongoing to track down other people involved.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned that the command would not tolerate mob justice or attacks on police personnel and facilities.

The police added that a full investigation has commenced and all those responsible would face prosecution.
