Police begins enforcement of mandatory reflective jackets for commercial motorcyclists in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has announced that it will begin enforcing the mandatory use of reflective jackets with serial numbers and riders’ identification cards for all commercial motorcyclists across the state from July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen security and improve the identification of operators.

The command said the initiative is aimed at addressing security challenges and enhancing the traceability of commercial motorcycle riders operating within the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed the development in a statement issued in Lokoja, stating that all commercial motorcyclists must wear reflective jackets bearing unique serial numbers and carry valid identification cards while carrying out their daily activities.

According to the statement, the reflective jackets will be colour-coded based on the state’s three senatorial districts. Riders in Kogi Central Senatorial District will wear yellow jackets, those in Kogi West will use blue, while operators in Kogi East will wear red.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure strict enforcement of the directive while maintaining professionalism and respecting the rights of citizens.

The police chief also warned officers against extorting or harassing commercial motorcyclists during the enforcement exercise, stressing that such conduct would not be tolerated.

The command, however, warned that any rider found violating the directive would be arrested, while the motorcycle involved would be impounded and released only after full compliance with the stipulated requirements.

It further advised members of the public to take note of the serial numbers and identification details of commercial motorcyclists they patronise, saying the information could assist security agencies during investigations or other security-related matters.

The Command urged commercial motorcyclists and other stakeholders to cooperate with the directive.
