OWERRI — The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Ifeanyichukwu Joseph, for allegedly attempting to kill his girlfriend’s 17-year-old niece, Chiamaka Chukwuokorie, by pushing her from a two-storey building in Owerri.

The incident reportedly occurred on November 1, 2026, at about 1pm, following an alleged altercation between the suspect and the teenager at Mbonu Ejike Street, Ikenegbu, Owerri.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said the victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is receiving treatment in critical condition.

Okoye said the suspect was rescued by police operatives after an angry mob reportedly attempted to lynch him following the incident.

He said the suspect was subsequently taken into police custody and was being investigated to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and facilitate appropriate legal action.

The police spokesman urged members of the public, particularly social media users, to refrain from circulating unverified information about the incident.

He quoted the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, as assuring residents that the incident was being thoroughly investigated and that all necessary steps would be taken to establish the facts and ensure justice.

The commissioner also appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their hands and allow the police to carry out their duties professionally.

The command said further developments would be communicated to the public as the investigation progresses.
