Pokémon Officially Unveils Incredible Gengar Redesign For 30th Anniversary

· · 3 min read

Pokémon‘s 30th anniversary has been absolutely packed with huge reveals and major announcements, and as such, much of the most exciting news has probably slipped under many fans’ radar.

With the Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration expansion, the long-awaited reveal of Pokémon Winds and Waves, the launch of Pokémon Pokopia, etc., 2026 has given Trainers plenty to celebrate and even more to keep track of on a stacked calendar. The return of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the franchise’s first PokémonXP fan event, and even the announcement of a brand-new animated movie have made this an especially exciting year for the franchise.

However, while much of the attention has obviously been on Pokémon’s future, the anniversary celebrations have also tapped into the nostalgia of some of the original 151 Pokémon that started it all. Gengar, the mischievous Ghost/Poison Mon that has been a fan favorite since Gen 1, recently received a striking new visual redesign that many fans may have missed amid the year’s biggest announcements, giving us an unexpected new take on one of the franchise’s most recognizable Pokémon.

Back in August after the hugely successful PokemonXP event, which brought several major announcements across the franchise, I first reported on Sideshow’s incredible new Gastly/Haunter/Gengar diorama, which was featured on full display alongside several other beautiful designs at the studio’s booth at the event.

The stunning diorama is an especially impressive tribute to Gengar’s entire evolutionary line, featuring all three of the beloved Gen 1 Ghost/Poison-types. Its centerpiece is of course Gengar itself, lunging forward with that familiar mischievous grin and what appear to be two Shadow Balls in its hands. Gastly hovers above with its swirling purple gaseous aura, while Haunter emerges from behind a twisted tree, creating an elaborate scene featuring all three of the iconic Mon.

The design has a distinctly eerie feel to it that feels particularly appropriate for this evolutionary line, which we run into in the animated series in various spooky episodes such as the iconic “Tower of Terror” and “A Shipful of Shivers.” The tangled tree roots, rugged terrain, and ghostly wisps make the trio look as though they’ve emerged straight from Lavender Town. Although this isn’t an actual new form or Mega Evolution for Gengar, it’s a beautifully styled artistic redesign that will certainly be a showstopper in anyone’s collection/display.

The official listing continues to mark the Gengar Diorama as “Coming Soon,” without a confirmed price, dimensions, release date, or preorder window. What collectors can do right now is RSVP through Sideshow to receive notifications when preorders finally open, which will likely be soon given the reveal earlier this year. For those who weren’t able to attend PokémonXP in San Francisco, you can take a look at the studio’s Facebook reveal here:

Sideshow also revealed a new Mewtwo statue at the event, adding to its expanding range of officially licensed Pokémon collectibles, which already includes impressive designs for Charizard, Snorlax, Pikachu, and Eevee. Judging by the prototype displayed at PokémonXP, which appears to stand roughly 12 to 18 inches tall, the Gengar Diorama could reasonably cost somewhere between $600 and $750, considering Sideshow’s similarly sized Snorlax Diorama retails for $695 and its Charizard statue costs $640. However, this is purely an estimate based on comparable collectibles, and official pricing has yet to be announced.

Gengar’s diorama is arguably among the most visually striking of the bunch, especially considering how cleverly it incorporates the entire line. With Halloween almost here, there’s also a particularly fitting reason to revisit the reveal, even if fans hoping to bring it home will have to keep waiting for concrete purchasing information. Hopefully, Sideshow will have more to share before the end of Pokémon‘s massive 30th anniversary celebrations.
