Playoffs: Wolfson completes high school volleyball season sweep
On the volleyball court, Averie Porter thrives on energy. On Tuesday night, she never slowed down.
“This time, we kept [the energy] high the whole time, even when we were down, and it really helped us a lot,” the Wolfson sophomore said.
The Wolfpack punched their ticket for the weekend by defeating Bolles 25-19, 25-23, 25-10 in the Florida High School Athletic Association Region 1-3A volleyball quarterfinals on Oct. 20.
Whenever Wolfson needed a key point, Porter usually wasn’t far away, smashing kill after kill with intensity at the net to continue her excellent season.
Bolles (14-11) built leads of 13-9 and 22-19 in the second set, but Monica Mina triggered a 5-0 run to swing the momentum back the Wolfpack’s way. The Wolfpack (20-6) wrapped up the second and dominated the third to eliminate the Bulldogs for the second consecutive year.
“We switched up the rotations a little bit in the last few games, and we found it [the right rhythm],” Wolfpack coach Brianna Kerley said. “It worked and it clicked.”
Wolfson next travels Oct. 24 to top seed Pensacola Catholic (24-4), which swept past Baldwin. Baldwin ends the year at 19-6.
Trinity Christian (23-6) won a rematch of their district final, 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 over Episcopal. The Conquerors next play Oct. 24 against Tallahassee Maclay or Orlando First Academy. For Episcopal (16-13), Alexis Galani finished with 12 kills, Vi Janikowski supplied 27 assists and Lacey Reed had 24 digs.
Top seed Christ’s Church improved to 20-7 with a 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 25-14 victory over Gainesville Countryside Christian (14-11).
Covenant School (17-8) punched its own ticket to the next round with a 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 25-21 victory at Tallahassee Community Christian (21-6).
They will next play against Beaches Chapel (19-5), which cruised to a 25-12, 25-12, 26-24 sweep of Wakulla Christian (16-3).
