Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons are in the midst of one of the most memorable free agency impasses in NBA history. Duren is fresh off his first All-Star appearance, and he entered the open market as the best free agent available. Months later, the center from Memphis remains unsigned.

According to Brett Siegel, Duren and his camp view himself as a max-level player who deserves over $40 million per season. The Pistons, meanwhile, don’t want to pay their star more than $35 million a year. The inability to agree on the financials behind a deal has seemingly led to a rift between the two sides. It has even been reported that Duren may play on his one-year qualifying offer and then bolt to a team like the Sacramento Kings in free agency next year.

Media Day is just days away for the Pistons, and if Duren doesn’t agree upon a new deal, he may miss Detroit’s first event of the year. He also has an Oct. 1 deadline to agree to play under the qualifying offer.

However, Shams Charania just reported that the Pistons have increased their offer to $200 million over five years, up from the five-year, $180-190 million deal that was last on the table.

“Over the last couple of weeks it has been kind of quiet on this front,” Charania said. “The sides have picked ip communication, and I am told right now the Pistons’ offer to Jalen Duren is $200 million over five years.”

Other stars around the league have started to get big paydays ahead of training camp. Amen Thompson was just handed a $208 million contract extension. Money flow around the league, both when it comes to other teams extending their players but also such teams having little money to give Duren on the open market as of now, puts the center and the only team he has played for in an interesting spot. Regardless, while Duren’s long-term future is unclear, the coming weeks will likely make it clear who the center will play for and at what price this coming season. Even a $200 million deal might not be enough to get the job done.
