Perfect Liverpool signing beats even Lamine Camara

The perfect Liverpool signing is waiting for them. He may be an even better bet than Lamine Camara in 2027.

Lamine Camara has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool and everyone expects there to be a bidding war in 2027. AS Monaco are willing sellers, even if they’re to set a big asking price for arguably their prized asset.

We’re big fans of the player. Camara feels like a natural signing for Liverpool as a midfielder who can control a game and bring defensive solidity – two things the Reds sorely lack right now.

But as we say, there will be a bidding war. Especially after his stellar start to the season with Monaco as the hype continues to climb and potentially drive prices even higher.

So what about an alternative? Well, there might be an even better bet for Liverpool and a player who could be exactly what they’re crying out for.

Sergi Altimira can be a sensation for Liverpool

Sergi Altimira joined Sporting CP this summer in a deal that maybe went a little under the radar. He was replacing Morten Hjulmand at the club after his move to Atletico Madrid.

Hjulmand had three very successful years in Portugal, winning the title twice and making the Team of the Year every season. Yet, Sporting genuinely might have upgraded.

Altimira is good. Very, very good. He’s about as solid a defensive midfielder as you’re going to find, in fact.

He was an absolute outlier in La Liga last season, with by far the highest tackles per 90 minutes among centre-midfielders. Altimira was also the midfielder who performed the highest number of weighted defensive actions and was 98th percentile for share of the defensive output.

On top of that, he was also 98th percentile for share of possession value for his team. Altimira is a defensive midfielder built for teams who need control.

Our Value Adder model lays that out nicely. He sits 5th across Europe’s top five leagues for possession value per 90 minutes – only Rodri, Vitinha, Frenkie de Jong and Samir El Mourabet score higher (and the latter there is a player we’d really like Liverpool to consider).

Defensive value per 90? We simply have Altimira as the best. That’s all regardless of position, he is a true standout.

Notably, he’s also picking this all up with Sporting. Per Fotmob, Altimira boasts the best pass success rate as well as scoring in elite percentiles for defensive contributions, tackles, recoveries and duel percentage.

He’s putting in genuinely world-class work in top leagues and yes, he’s just moved clubs but we really think Altimira is one for Liverpool to watch. He could be on another level to anyone else they’re looking at.
