Peanuts Revisits One Of Snoopy's Most Devastating Moments In New 2027 Release

· · 3 min read

Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts has taken readers on a roller-coaster ride through all the emotions over its more than 75-year history. It’s far from a simple comic strip, tapping into universal human truths, finding humor in disappointment, comfort in friendship, and featuring surprisingly heartbreaking moments in the everyday lives of its beloved characters.

For Charlie Brown, life has often felt like one setback after another. Whether he’s missing another football kick, struggling on the baseball diamond, or hoping to catch the attention of the Little Red-Haired Girl, his optimism somehow survives even the most crushing defeats. Snoopy, meanwhile, brings an entirely different energy to the franchise, escaping into elaborate fantasies and finding joy in life’s smallest moments. However, even the world’s most imaginative beagle isn’t immune to loneliness, heartbreak, and sadness.

And in an upcoming 2027 release, Peanuts is revisiting one of Snoopy’s most devastating moments that every fan is sure to remember, bringing back one of Schulz’s most touching stories after 60 years.

One of the most heartbreaking moments in Peanuts history is officially returning, as Titan Comics prepares to release Peanuts: You’re Something Special, Snoopy on March 9, 2027. The upcoming collection revisits some of Charles M. Schulz’s most memorable comic strips, including the devastating moment when Snoopy’s beloved doghouse burned to the ground, leaving the iconic beagle without a home.

The 128-page paperback is the 23rd installment in Titan Comics’ ongoing Peanuts Facsimile series, which republishes classic collections of Schulz’s original newspaper strips. Priced at $7.99, the book features 122 strips originally published between 1965 and 1966, bringing back familiar characters including Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Sally, Schroeder, Frieda, and Pig-Pen.

The original doghouse fire storyline was published on September 19, 1966, beginning with Charlie Brown discovering smoke and realizing that Snoopy’s home had caught fire. Fans will of course recognize that, while the doghouse looks like a tiny, average doghouse from the outside, Schulz had spent years establishing its hilariously elaborate interior, complete with a library, pool table, record collection, and even a priceless Van Gogh painting.

Sadly, all those priceless possessions were lost in the blaze, leaving Snoopy completely deflated. The storyline continued over the following weeks, with several strips depicting the charred remains of his former home. Fortunately, the tragedy got a happy ending eventually when Charlie Brown gave Snoopy a replacement doghouse a few weeks later.

Interestingly, Schulz drew inspiration for the storyline from a real-life tragedy, as his own art studio had been destroyed by fire earlier in 1966. The personal connection explains why the storyline hits so hard, though that’s nicely balanced out with Schulz’s signature humor.

Although the upcoming release brings the story back for modern readers, this isn’t the first time it has been republished. You’re Something Special, Snoopy was originally released by Fawcett in 1966, while the doghouse fire storyline was subsequently included in Fantagraphics’ The Complete Peanuts: 1965–1966, published in hardcover in 2007. The strips also appeared in the paperback The Complete Peanuts: 1963–1966 box set released in 2018.

Outside this iconic and tragic Snoopy tale, the new Titan Comics collection features plenty of additional Peanuts adventures revolving around school, summer camp, baseball, algebra, and the Great Pumpkin. For longtime fans, it’s a great opportunity to revisit some of Schulz’s most memorable work, while younger readers can finally experience one of Snoopy’s best story arcs more than six decades later.
