Patriots will go back to the Super Bowl thanks to one crucial offseason decision

The Patriots were good enough to reach the Super Bowl last season. Trading for A.J. Brown may be the decision that allows them to finish the job. New England’s 29-13 loss to Seattle exposed the difference between having a promising offense and having one capable of surviving the final game of the season. Drake Maye was pressured, forced into mistakes, and left without a receiver who could consistently win when the structure of the play disappeared.

Brown changes that. He is a true WR1 who can beat press coverage, create after the catch, and command safety help. That gives Maye answers he did not consistently have during a season in which he threw for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns. Imagine. If only.

And the fit matters as much as the talent

Brown can win on slants, deep in-breakers and vertical routes – areas that match Maye’s arm strength and willingness to attack downfield. His presence should also create cleaner opportunities for New England’s secondary receivers and prevent defenses from crowding the middle without consequence.

The trade does not make the Patriots flawless. The offensive line still has to protect Maye better than it did against Seattle, and Brown’s health must be managed through a long season. But New England already proved it can win the AFC without him.

Now the Patriots have added the type of player who changes how postseason defenses prepare. In close January games, one receiver who can defeat man coverage on third down may be more valuable than several smaller upgrades spread across the roster.

New England paid a high price because contenders eventually have to make serious bets. The Patriots did not trade for Brown to become more entertaining. They traded for him to turn last season’s Super Bowl appearance into another opportunity – and this time, a championship.
