John Saunders Jr. did just about everything possible to force his way onto the New England Patriots‘ initial 53-man roster.

It still was not enough.

Saunders was among the players released by New England before Sunday’s roster deadline, according to the team’s official roster breakdown. His departure qualifies as one of the Patriots’ most surprising decisions after the young safety recorded a team-high five interceptions during training camp practices.

That type of production normally creates a compelling case for a roster spot. The Patriots, however, made a late move that altered the equation in their secondary.

New England acquired safety Jaylen Reed from the Houston Texans as part of the trade that sent wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to Houston. Reed joined a safety room led by Kevin Byard III and Craig Woodson, leaving Saunders in a much more difficult position ahead of the deadline. Byard led the NFL in interceptions last season, while Woodson has emerged as one of New England’s most promising young defenders. Reed is expected to compete with Dell Pettus for snaps in packages that require a bigger nickel defender or dime linebacker.

Pettus also has established himself as one of the Patriots’ most dependable special teams players. The former undrafted free agent led New England with 320 special teams snaps last season and has now made the roster in three consecutive years. That combination left Saunders without an obvious game-day role, even after his impressive summer.

Saunders’ release is another reminder that preseason production does not always carry the same weight as positional versatility and special teams value when NFL teams construct the bottom of a roster.

Five practice interceptions proved Saunders could make plays on the ball. The Patriots apparently decided Reed and Pettus offered more immediate flexibility behind Byard and Woodson. It is a difficult ending to an otherwise encouraging camp, but Saunders should have improved his standing around the league. Young defensive backs with demonstrated ball production tend to attract attention, especially once teams begin examining the players exposed during final cuts.

The Patriots would presumably welcome the opportunity to return Saunders to their practice squad if he clears waivers. After the summer he produced, however, New England cannot safely assume that will happen. Saunders may have lost the final roster battle in Foxborough, but five interceptions ensured he did not leave quietly.
