Patrick Stewart & Walter Koenig’s Final Star Trek Appearances Were Officially In The Same Show

· · 4 min read

In a cosmic coincidence, Patrick Stewart and Walter Koenig’s final Star Trek appearances are in the same episode of Star Trek: Picard. Stewart passed away at 86 on Thursday, August 29, 2026, just a few days after Koenig died at 90 years old. The Star Trek community and beyond are devastated by the loss of two genuine icons of the stage and screen.

Sir Patrick Stewart is a towering figure, beloved by generations for his two best-known roles: Star Trek’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier in Fox’s X-Men movies. Stewart played Picard in seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, four TNG feature films, and three seasons of Star Trek: Picard. Stewart is a luminary from the Royal Shakespearean Company with numerous film, TV, and stage credits.

While he wasn’t cast as a leading man like Stewart, Walter Koenig is unforgettable as Pavel Chekov, the Russian Starfleet Officer he portrayed in two seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series and seven Star Trek movies. However, many sci-fi fans consider Koenig’s role as Alfred Bester in Babylon 5 his best. Koenig is also an accomplished writer and teacher who was popular on the Star Trek convention circuit.

Incredibly, Patrick Stewart and Walter Koenig’s final appearances in Star Trek were in the series finale of Star Trek: Picard. Written and directed by Terry Matalas, Star Trek: Picard‘s season 3 ender, “The Last Generation,” opened with Koenig voicing Anton Chekov, the President of the United Federation of Planets, who warned that the Borg had assimilated every Starfleet Officer under 25.

“The Last Generation” was Patrick Stewart’s last hurrah as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, who led the crew of the USS Enterprise-D against a massive Borg Cube. Picard rescued his son, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and freed him from the clutches of his nemesis, the Borg Queen (Alice Krige). After the Borg’s ultimate defeat, Picard, Jack, and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) reconcile as a makeshift family.

Sir Patrick Stewart’s final bow with his beloved fellow Star Trek: The Next Generation castmates was one more poker game. Director Terry Matalas allowed his camera to linger with the Enterprise-D’s icons, letting the audience soak in their natural banter in a lively echo of the final scene of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s legendary series finale, “All Good Things…”

Koenig and Stewart’s last words in Star Trek were fittingly poignant. President Anton Chekov quoted his father, Pavel, reminding the Federation that “Hope is never lost. There are always possibilities.” In the climatic moments of “The Last Generation,” a content Admiral Picard, having saved the galaxy one last time, told his Enterprise family, “I’ve come to believe that the stars have always been in my favor.”

Patrick Stewart & Walter Koenig Are A Profound Loss For Star Trek

The magnitude of losing both Walter Koenig and Patrick Stewart in the same week is immeasurable. One was already difficult to endure, but both are a wound to Star Trek fans that may never heal. That both Stewart and Koenig died during Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary year further darkens what has turned out to be a devastating 12 months for the Star Trek franchise and its fans.

Voice actor Eric Bauza, who voiced several characters in Star Trek: Lower Decks, also passed away the same week as Walter Koenig and Patrick Stewart.

Koenig was one of the last three living actors from Star Trek: The Original Series. Now, only William Shatner and George Takei remain from the original Starship Enterprise cast that started it all. To his credit, Walter was active to the end, making convention appearances and even podcasting about his classic Star Trek episodes on The 7th Rule until his health no longer allowed.

Stewart is now the first main actor from Star Trek: The Next Generation to pass away. Sir Patrick is also the first actor to play a Captain who led a Star Trek series to die. The TNG cast must now soldier on without their Captain. However, Stewart still has one final performance fans haven’t seen: reprising Professor Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 is arguably the most acclaimed single season of any Star Trek on Paramount+ series, and it was a crowd-pleasing and emotionally fulfilling farewell to Star Trek: The Next Generation. “The Last Generation” now takes on an even greater resonance as the shared final Star Trek appearances of Patrick Stewart and Walter Koenig.
