Xander Bogaerts needed exactly one inning Thursday afternoon to accomplish something no San Diego Padres player had ever done before.
Bogaerts homered and tripled during a massive seven-run second inning against the Colorado Rockies, becoming the first player in franchise history to record both in the same inning, according to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs.

It was also something baseball hadn’t seen in nearly a decade before this season. Bogaerts became just the second MLB player to accomplish the feat in 2026, joining Tristan Peters, who did it on July 10. Before this year, the last player to homer and triple in the same inning was Shin-Soo Choo on April 26, 2017.
Bogaerts started the second by crushing a solo home run off Tanner Gordon to tie the game at 1-1. By the time his spot came around again, the Padres had completely broken the game open. With San Diego leading 6-1, Bogaerts drove a ball toward right field that Zac Veen couldn’t come up with. Bogaerts raced around the bases for an RBI triple, completing the historic inning and giving the Padres a 7-1 advantage.
Then things got even more interesting. Bogaerts stepped to the plate for a third time in the fourth and ripped a ground-rule double, leaving him only a single away from completing the cycle before the fourth inning was even over.
It’s been an up-and-down season for Bogaerts after his excellent second half in 2025, but this is exactly the type of performance San Diego would love to see heading toward October.
The Padres entered Thursday with nine games remaining after their series finale in Colorado and control of the NL’s final Wild Card spot. They’re also still chasing Philadelphia and Chicago for an opportunity to host a Wild Card Series at Petco Park.
If Bogaerts gets hot now, San Diego’s lineup suddenly becomes considerably more dangerous. And Thursday’s historic afternoon certainly qualifies as a good start.
