Padres fall in extras, finish 3-for-20 with runners in scoring position

It appeared that once again Samad Taylor would prove to be the spark the San Diego Padres needed to get a win and clinch the series against the Cincinnati Reds at Petco Park on Tuesday night. But that proved not to be the case when the Reds got a two-run home run from Sal Stewart off Yuki Matsui in the top of the 11th inning, which handed the Padres a 5-3 loss.

Taylor came up in the top of the 10th inning with San Diego down a run after Cincinnati scored a run in the top of the inning. Gavin Sheets was on second base as the automatic runner and he was able to score when Taylor lined a single into center field to tie the game at 3-3. The speedy Taylor later stole second base and was in scoring position for Jase Bowen and Freddy Fermin. Bowen struck out and Fermin connected on a deep drive to left field that died on the warning track and was caught for the final out.

The game was tied heading into the 11th and Padres manager Craig Stammen called on Matsui to face lefty JJ Bleday with Blake Dunn on second base. Bleday connected on a flyball into right field, which was caught for the out but allowed Dunn to tag-up and move to third. Matsui then faced Stewart, a righty, and he connected on the first pitch with a drive that landed over the wall in center field to give the Reds a 5-3 lead. Matsui got the next two batters out, but the damage was done.

The Padres sent Sung-Mun Song, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill to the plate in the bottom of the 11th and Fermin was on second base. Song hit a weak popout, Tatis grounded out to second base, which allowed Fermin to move to first and Merrill hit a weak fly to center field to end the game.

San Diego had multiple chances to get the win, but when the time came for the stars to shine, the Padres stars did what they have been doing all season and burned out before making an impact. The Padres had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out and the game tied, 2-2. Manny Machado struck out for the second out of the inning and Gavin Sheets struck out to end the frame. San Diego had Machado on third base with one out in the bottom of the eighth and the game tied, 2-2. Ty France was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners and Taylor struck out and Bowen flied out to end the inning. To better illustrate the missed opportunities for the Padres, they finished 3-for-20 with runners in scoring position.

While they did not come through when it mattered most, Tatis finished 4-for-6 with a run scored, Merrill finished 2-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI and Machado finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Taylor also had two hits in the game and Song and Will Wagner each contributed with a hit.

On the pitching front for San Diego, Lucas Giolito started and lasted just four inning. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts. David Morgan, Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Mason Miller combined to pitch five innings without allowing a run. Bradgley Rodriguez allowed the automatic runner to score in the top of the 10th. He allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts. Matsui allowed two runs on one hit with a strikeout.

San Diego will try to win the series today at 1:10 p.m. with ace Michael King taking the mound.

On back-to-back nights Samad Taylor has announced his presence at the MLB level with authority. He helped get a winning result on Monday and nearly did it again Tuesday, Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune says Talor may be the right player at the right time for the Padres.

Freddy Fermin hit three home runs in four days and looks to be a much more confident offensively. Dennis Lin of The Athletic says the hope is the confidence Fermin seems to have spreads throughout the team.
