Packers release two players, including veteran OL, from practice squad

The Green Bay Packers released two players from the practice squad on Tuesday: veteran offensive lineman Cordell Volson and rookie running back Damon Bankston.

Volson, who made 48 starts at left guard for the Cincinnati Bengals between 2022 and 2024, was signed to the Packers practice squad on Sept. 17 after failing to make the 53-man roster of the Tennessee Titans this summer. Bankston, a rookie out of New Mexico who visited Green Bay before the draft, was signed on Sept. 9 after practice squad running back Pierre Strong Jr. injured his hamstring.

The Packers now have two open spots on the practice squad. Becton was signed to the practice squad on Monday, but the Packers released defensive lineman Eric Johnson from the practice squad in a corresponding roster move.

Breakdown: Volson got 12 days in Green Bay and clearly didn’t prove he was capable of helping a faltering offensive line. Over the last few days, the Packers added veterans Laken Tomlinson and Mekhi Becton, making Volson redundant. Bankston was the emergency option on the practice squad while Pierre Strong Jr. recovered. It would be safe to assume that Strong is now healthy.
