Packers linked to signing 41-sack potential cap casualty

With minicamps underway across the NFL, several veterans could be on the cusp of being released as cap casualties, including some players who could be ideal fits for the Packers.

As general manager Brian Gutekunst and Green Bay look to add quality depth along the front seven for new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, and a potential short-term replacement for Micah Parsons as the All-Pro works his way back from a torn ACL, the Packers could be one of the more active teams scouring free agency between now and training camp getting underway.

Packers linked to Arik Armstead

Over at Bleacher Report, Alex Kay put together a list of the most likely cap casualties to come across the league and their ideal fits, including the Packers as the perfect destination for veteran edge rusher Arik Armstead, if the Jacksonville Jaguars move on.

“The Green Bay Packers have been looking to get over the playoff hump,” Kay writes for B/R. “After several fruitless trips and could benefit mightily from a grizzled veteran like Armstead joining their side. The Pack have a talented but young defensive line, one that could use a mentor and part-time rotational piece like Armstead to push them to the next level.”

Signing Armstead, who boasts 41 career sacks would both be an insurance policy on Lukas Van Ness not stepping up, and fourth-round pick Dani Dennis-Sutton not being ready to contribute immediately in Parsons’ absence and an ideal running mate for Parsons once he returns.

If Jacksonville releases Armstead to create cap space, look for the Packers to potentially swoop in and give the veteran a chance to chase a ring.
