Orioles Reportedly Claim Luis Robert Jr. From Waivers Amid Recent Hot Streak

· · 2 min read

The Baltimore Orioles entered play on Monday one game out of a wild card spot and claimed Luis Robert Jr. off waivers, per MLB.com.

Robert is about a $5 million gamble for the Orioles as they look to sneak into the postseason. He is due around $3 million for the remainder of this season and has a $20 million club option with a $2 million buyout for next season. He has not had the best year, and missed a chunk of time with injury, but he has been good this month.

In August, he is slashing .267/.321/.520 with six home runs. He has a .841 OPS in his last 24 games and could be a real asset for the Orioles down the stretch. The Orioles rank ninth in home runs and runs scored this season. They are not a bad offense, and Robert should provide them with a little extra for the final month.

None of the Orioles’ primary outfielders have had a great year offensively, and Robert has a chance to be a difference-maker if he stays hot. He has one All-Star nod and a Silver Slugger to his name, but has not been that player consistently.

He hit 38 homers and stole 20 bases in 2023, but has been plagued by injuries for most of his career. Last season, he played in 110 games, but had a .661 OPS. However, his OPS in the last 31 games he played last year was .808. The Mets likely saw that and hoped that he could be a star for them.

That did not happen, and now the Orioles are willing to take the risk on him, hoping he can help them play baseball in October.
