Oklahoma’s title teaches an important lesson about college baseball

On Monday, the 2026 college baseball season came to an end. Oklahoma dominated North Carolina 13-2 in the decisive final game of the College World Series to win the national championship.

So what does the Sooners’ title mean for the Trojans? Well, aside from the fact that watching Oklahoma win a national championship in any sport is likely not very fun for USC fans, this postseason did teach us an important lesson about the sport of college baseball.

The Sooners were not a great team during the regular season. In fact, they finished with a losing record in SEC play, going just 14-16 in conference action. However, when the NCAA Tournament rolled around, they suddenly got red hot, taking down five top 16 opponents in less than a month to win the title.

This NCAA Tournament taught us that in college baseball, it is often not the best team that wins, but rather the one that gets hot at the right time. The Trojans actually got hot for a bit in the postseason themselves, scoring seven or more runs in five consecutive games, before coming back down to earth in the super regional against North Carolina. In future seasons, Andy Stankiewicz and USC will look to keep the momentum going through the postseason and get back to the College World Series for the first time since 2001.
