Oklahoma Sooners considered making a quarterback change

The Oklahoma Sooners fell apart in a 41-13 road loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, and the offense was again the main culprit. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle’s unit has had a hard time making a positive impact, and it showed again on Saturday.

Much of OU’s struggle against the Dawgs came from turnovers, including three first-half giveaways by starting quarterback John Mateer. His two lost fumbles and an interception helped Georgia build an insurmountable lead before halftime. He struggled mightily in a nightmare performance.

Many were surprised Mateer wasn’t benched in favor of either Whitt Newbauer or Bowe Bentley against the Bulldogs, but he played every snap for the Sooners despite the bad day at the office.

Head coach Brent Venables was asked if Oklahoma thought about making a change at quarterback. Venables said, “It was something that we discussed.”

After the game, Arbuckle was also asked whether the Sooners considered making a change.

“Yeah, I mean we discussed all options on the headset, and ultimately still felt like John was our best choice to go win the game right there,” Arbuckle said. “So that was talked about, and that was the conclusion we came up with.”

It’s hard to see a reality where any quarterback on this roster has success on offense with where the Sooners are at right now, but Mateer certainly hurt Oklahoma big-time on Saturday.
