Oklahoma football made a significant financial commitment to Brent Venables, and the cost of firing him has already doubled. The Sooners. signed Venables to a six-year contract extension in August, keeping him under contract through January 2032.
The new agreement is worth $63 million, averaging $10.5 million annually. However, its buyout provisions reveal how expensive a coaching change could become.
According to George Stoia of On3, Oklahoma would owe Venables approximately $51.67 million if it fired him after the 2026 season. Without the extension, that figure would have been approximately $26.2 million.

The buyout decreases to $41.67 million after 2027 and $31.67 million after 2028. It falls to $21.67 million after 2029 and approximately $5.83 million after 2030.
Venables will earn $10 million in 2026, with annual raises of $200,000. His salary reaches $11 million in 2031.
The contract also includes performance incentives tied to postseason success. Venables can earn $500,000 for reaching the College Football Playoff, plus additional bonuses for advancing.
The financial details emerge during an uneven season for Oklahoma. The Sooners entered October with questions surrounding their offense and Venables’ long-term future.
However, Oklahoma recently defeated No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry, securing a 27-24 victory.
That result provided a timely boost for Venables following earlier struggles.
Oklahoma’s substantial buyout now adds another consideration to any future coaching decision. The extension offers stability, but moving in another direction would carry a high financial cost.
For Oklahoma, the extension represents more than a vote of confidence in Venables. It also raises the financial stakes surrounding the program’s future.
Sustained success in the SEC could justify that investment, while continued struggles would make any potential coaching change considerably more expensive.
