The Edmonton Oilers clearly didn’t want to let Jason Dickinson get away.

The veteran center was due to be a free agent, but that won’t be the case anymore. He has a new contract with the Oilers.

The Oilers announced Dickinson’s deal officially on their social media channels at 12 noon ET (9 a.m. PT) on Sunday:

The $20 million in total value is about what was expected for Dickinson, who was thought to be worth between $4-5 million per year.

The Oilers traded for Dickinson before the deadline from the Chicago Blackhawks because of how reliable he can be in a bottom-six forward role.

“A defense-first center who specializes in smothering opponents, Dickinson is ideally suited for a bottom-six and penalty-kill role on a strong team,” The Athletic’s Chris Johnston wrote earlier in June. “He was a good fit in Edmonton after coming over from the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline until an ankle injury slowed him down for the playoffs.”

There was a thought that maybe Dickinson would end up with a different contender. Turns out, he’s staying put to try and make it work in Edmonton.

This season didn’t end how the Oilers wanted, but Dickinson is returning to try and help them do better this time around.
