Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith Lands at No. 2 on Freaks List

· · 2 min read

Bruce Feldman’s annual ” Freaks ” list article is written every year not necessarily to highlight the best players in the sport, but to showcase some of the unique athletes. It appears this upcoming season, Ohio State football will have both. This year’s list consists of 101 total players and there are two Buckeyes mentioned.

First and foremost was wide receiver Jeremiah Smith who was listed at No. 2. Smith’s inclusion comes as a shock to nobody. The 6-foot-3 Smith was called by Feldman “the best player on this list and in the country.” Feldman reported that Smith had clocked a 1.44-second 10-yard split, which is the fastest in the entire Ohio State program.

A 6-6, 235-pound WR with an 82 1/2-inch wingspan who runs a 10.1 100M? A 327-pound DT who hit almost 21 MPH?!? And Jeremiah Smith clocked WHAT this off-season?!?

Also on the list for Ohio State was Brenten “Inky” Jones at No. 29. Jones, a former walk-on, has developed into a 6-foot-2, 216-pound defensive back and special-teams gunner with incredible testing numbers. His top-end speed is 23.52 miles per hour. He broad jumped 11 feet this offseason as well as clocked in a 1.47 10-yard split. Along with his speed, he also bench pressed 385 pounds and squatted 555.

The list’s purpose is not to correlate with future production or NFL Draft projections, but instead it is mean to highlight physical traits that separate individuals from the rest at their position group. It appears that Ohio State this season will have both talent on the field and its share of “freaks.”
