Ogun: Female visitor nabbed for smuggling ’Colos’ to death row inmate

Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has arrested a female visitor, identified as Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, for attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, MSCC, Ibara, Abeokuta.

The suspect was apprehended at about 1:33 pm on Friday during routine screening at the facility’s main entry point, after officers detected suspicious substances hidden inside a 1kg sachet of Milo beverage powder.

The substance is believed to be the psychoactive synthetic drug commonly known as “Colos”.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Odukoya Olayinka, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST on Monday.

Olayinka stated that the suspect was attempting to deliver the package to an inmate, Dare Sowunmi, who is currently on death row at the facility.

Following the interception, the officers detained Mrs Sowunmi and handed her over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA) for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the State Controller of Corrections, Abioye Adesina, commended his personnel for their vigilance and adherence to security protocols.

Controller Adesina reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and the introduction of any other illegal substances, warning that anyone caught introducing contraband into the facility would face the full weight of the law.

“Our custodial facilities exist to ensure public safety, reformation, and rehabilitation. We maintain an absolute zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking or any illegal acts designed to compromise security.

“Attempts to introduce contraband into our facilities will be met with swift legal action,” Controller Adesina stated.

The Service urged the general public to respect the integrity of custodial institutions.
