Hamburger SV have officially confirmed Rayan Philippe’s season-long loan move to Bundesliga newcomers Paderborn, with the East Westphalian club also securing an option to make the transfer permanent. The Hamburger Abendblatt reports Paderborn’s purchase option is worth approximately €5m-€6m.

Strong summer ends with Paderborn loan

Philippe joined HSV from Eintracht Braunschweig last summer for approximately €2.5m after scoring 22 goals in 63 competitive appearances for the Lower Saxony club. His first Bundesliga campaign produced five goals in 28 league appearances. The 25-year-old nevertheless entered this summer facing an uncertain future before responding with an encouraging preseason.

Hamburg’s late squad movements subsequently altered the picture. Fábio Vieira’s return added another established attacking option to a group already containing significant competition for minutes. Philippe consequently informed HSV that he wished to pursue more regular playing time. Paderborn now provide precisely that opportunity.

Philippe slots into rebuilt Paderborn attack

The move also arrives at an opportune moment for the promoted side. Paderborn opened their Bundesliga campaign with a scoreless draw at Mainz and have spent the closing stages of the transfer window significantly reshaping their attack.

His pace, dribbling ability and willingness to attack open space give Paderborn another transition weapon, while his experience playing centrally, from the right and in narrower attacking roles suits Kettemann’s fluid approach.

The Frenchman therefore moves from a congested HSV attacking corps into a Paderborn squad that appears capable of furnishing him with a significantly clearer route to regular Bundesliga football. The purchase option also leaves the door open for the arrangement to become permanent next summer.

Statements on Rayan Philippe’s Paderborn move

“We know what Rayan is capable of,” HSV sporting director Claus Costa said in the club statement. “He had a good preseason and demonstrated his qualities in the friendlies. Recent movements within our squad changed his situation at short notice. He thus expressed a desire for more playing time.

“With SC Paderborn, an option has now emerged that works for all sides,” Costa continued. “It was important to us that he could continue developing and testing himself at the highest possible level.”

Paderborn managing director for sport Sebastian Lange believes Philippe adds several qualities the promoted club requires.

“With his exceptional pace, technique, dribbling ability and finishing quality, he will help us,” Lange said.
