Offer rejected: Chelsea reject winger offer with Alonso unwilling to weaken wide options

Chelsea have rejected an approach from Roma for Jamie Gittens, with the Blues seemingly unwilling to weaken their wide options during the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old endured a difficult first campaign at Stamford Bridge after arriving from Borussia Dortmund, but there are signs that Chelsea still see a future for him under Xabi Alonso.

With Alejandro Garnacho already leaving and uncertainty surrounding Pedro Neto, keeping Gittens could now become increasingly important.

Chelsea turn down loan offer from Roma

According to Sky Sports, Roma approached Chelsea over a deal that would have seen Gittens initially move to Italy on loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent next summer.

Chelsea rejected that proposal and, at this stage, a departure appears unlikely.

The decision is understandable given the changing picture in Chelsea’s attack. Garnacho completed a season-long loan move to Aston Villa in July, with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

There is also continuing uncertainty over Neto, who has attracted strong interest from Al-Hilal.
Meanwhile, talkSPORT reported that Chelsea intend to keep Gittens after rejecting Roma’s offer.

The winger has also impressed during pre-season, contributing a goal and an assist on Chelsea’s summer tour after a frustrating debut campaign in which injuries restricted his impact.

Gittens deserves another season at Stamford Bridge

Selling Gittens now would feel premature.

His first year at Chelsea was underwhelming, with only one goal and five assists across 27 appearances, but judging a young winger after one injury-disrupted season would be short-sighted.

More importantly, Chelsea’s circumstances have changed.

Garnacho is already gone, while Neto could still depart if Al-Hilal meet Chelsea’s demands. Allowing Gittens to leave as well would suddenly reduce the depth Alonso has available in wide areas.

The Roma proposal also does little for Chelsea financially. A loan with an option to buy gives the Italian club flexibility while leaving Chelsea carrying much of the risk.

Gittens still possesses the pace and one-on-one ability that convinced Chelsea to invest heavily in him. Rather than cashing out after one difficult year, giving him another season to prove himself feels like the smarter approach.
