October 28 Is Officially A Huge Day For PlayStation Plus Subscribers

· · 2 min read

PlayStation Plus is officially getting a huge upgrade for millions of subscribers on October 28, and it’s coming at a pretty good time.

It’s been a particularly rocky year for PlayStation and the video game industry, on the whole. Between the middling reviews for Marvel’s Wolverine and the controversial decision to completely ditch physical media moving forward, it’s not exactly been a laugh a minute.

The good news, at least for millions of PlayStation gamers in Korea, is that PlayStation will officially launch its cloud streaming service for PS5 games in South Korea on October 28. This is a PlayStation Plus Premium-exclusive feature that will allow subscribers to stream over 300 supported games included in the Game Catalog on PS5 consoles and via PlayStation Portal. Even better, PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers will be upgraded to the higher Premium tier at no extra cost.

PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers will already have been upgraded to Premium by now hopefully, as the change started rolling out on October 21. That means cloud streaming will become another benefit alongside monthly free games, online multiplayer, and cloud storage. It’s worth noting that the PlayStation 5 supports 4K streaming, while the PlayStation Portal can manage 1080p at 60fps without being connected to a PS5 consoles.

Supported titles in the Game Catalog include the likes of Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy 15, and Hogwarts Legacy. You can also stream a ton of games you own without having to download them first, like Crimson Desert, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Ghost of Yōtei.

Unfortunately, there’s one catch. For some reason, in South Korea, PS4 and PS3 games will not be supported at launch, and there’s no word on when (or if) they will be. PSVR 2 games are also not mentioned, although that’s not a huge surprise given the way Sony has treated the virtual reality device. To celebrate the launch this week, a Korea-exclusive set of 10 Black Desert PlayStation Plus avatars has been released, and will remain available until March 31, 2027.

“Thank you for your patience,” reads an official blog post. “The cloud streaming service for PS5 games, playable on the PlayStation 5 console and PlayStation Portal Remote Player, will be officially launched in Korea on October 28, 2026. Existing PlayStation Plus Deluxe members will automatically be upgraded to PlayStation Plus Premium at no additional cost. In addition to the various PlayStation Plus benefits already provided, such as monthly games, online multiplayer, PlayStation Store discounts, exclusive content packs, and cloud storage, you can now also access cloud streaming services. In Korea, cloud streaming is currently only supported for PS5 games; PS4 and PS3 games are not available via cloud streaming.”

Subscribers around the world are hopeful this is a sign cloud streaming will come to other major territories, like Australia, which I’m genuinely shocked to discover doesn’t support the feature. Although, of course, it’s worth remembering not everywhere has the cloud data-center infrastructure required for PlayStation’s streaming services.
