Notre Dame football’s Marcus Freeman on painted hairline: 'If rain's in the forecast, put a hat on'

INDIANAPOLIS — Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman sported a new haircut in his team’s 41-13 trouncing of Wisconsin on Sunday, and his perfectly-straight, widened, hairline sent social media over the edge.

While talking to reporters in a close-up shot at Lambeau Field, instead of his signature short curls, Freeman debuted his off-season transformation of classic waves and a fade in Notre Dame’s season opener.

“Only, his hairline was a little too perfect,” wrote Bruce Goodwin II on rnbphilly.com, “and looked sharpened with some dye.”

IndyStar reached out to Freeman for comment on his viral do. He “respectfully declined” an interview.

To be fair, Freeman has already addressed the topic of his hairline. In July, he joined the Not Just Football podcast with Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward.

“Marcus, I got to ask about the hair,” Heyward said, laughing. “It has its own story.”

Freeman gave a brief, lighthearted lecture on caring for his cut.

“You know, you can put a little magic in there to keep the line sharp … you know, you start thinning out in the corners, you got to make sure your corners are straight,” Freeman said. “You put a little enhancement in there, you know?”

Freeman went on to joke about the hazards of the weather with an enhanced hairline.

“Hey, listen. Now, you see it’s raining in the forecast, put a hat on,” he said. “Hey, you’ve got to be proactive. You know, don’t be reactive. Be proactive.

Jaylen Brown prompted his own viral sensation in October when the then-Boston Celtics guard left dark residue from his spray-on hairline onto the jerseys of opposing players during a game.

Brown later joked on a livestream that “ten years of stress, the media, the championships” in Boston caused his hair thinning. He is now with the Sixers.

After his memes took social media by storm, Brown partnered with Nutrafol to help de-stigmatize male hair loss and thinning.

in 2012, Chicago Bulls big man Carlos Boozer’s hair made headlines when his artificial hairline was compared to shoe polish by fans.

Boozer’s painted-on, jet-black look, he said, was the result of the men’s hair dye product Bigen, which was recommended to him by a friend to cover up thinning areas.
