‘Not joking’ – Sophie Cunningham’s ‘chops’ can make her perfect WNBA Commissioner, says expert

Sophie Cunningham receives support from Jason Whitlock for her WNBA Commissioner ambitions.

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has been very vocal about the WNBA’s ongoing search for its next commissioner after the retirement of Cathy Engelbert.

Aside from naming the qualities that the next WNBA Commissioner should have, Cunningham has expressed interest in taking the job herself.

Fans have been divided over Cunningham’s declaration, but sports expert Jason Whitlock is 100% on board with the Fever star taking the helm of the W.

Many experts have labeled a lack of transparency and accountability as the biggest flaws during Engelbert’s stint. Evidently, the next WNBA Commissioner needs to be someone who has those qualities in them.

Keeping that in mind, Whitlock believes Cunningham’s bold and outspoken personality makes her a great candidate to run the league.

“I’m not joking. No, I’m dead serious. She’s the only one with the chops to handle the job. You don’t need a law degree to run the WNBA. You don’t need endless business experience to run the WNBA.

“You need b____, basketballs, and Sophie’s got it. You need a skin thick enough to withstand the heat,” Whitlock said.

If some say Cunningham lacks experience, Whitlock says NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is there to mentor her. Additionally, her close relationship with Caitlin Clark is certainly a point in her favor.

“The experience and expertise Adam Silver and the NBA can provide all of that. You need a relationship with Caitlin Clark and enough of the other players in the W to matter,” Whitlock added.

Of course, Cunningham would have to retire from the WNBA to even be considered for the job right now, as current active players cannot become the chief executive officer of the league.
