Niger: Police confirm IED found at New Bussa General Hospital
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) within the premises of the General Hospital, New Bussa, in Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The device was reportedly discovered on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at about 11:20am.
A resident of New Bussa told our correspondent that the device was spotted by a security personnel at the hospital, who alerted conventional security operatives.
The police command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving information about the discovery.
According to the command, the operatives rendered the device safe, swept the hospital premises and took the exhibit into custody for further necessary action.
A source who spoke on the incident said the discovery created panic among people around the hospital.
“Right now, soldiers and police are moving around the hospital. Only patients and one or two of their relatives are allowed into the hospital now. The general population is no longer allowed in,” the source said.
However, the police said the situation was brought under control, while security around the hospital was beefed up, saying normalcy had since been restored in the area.
The command did not disclose who planted the device or the motive behind the incident.
