Niceville routs West Florida, celebrates Adron Robinson 1st win as HC

NICEVILLE — Adron Robinson held it together for most of Thursday night’s postgame huddle.

In the aftermath of a 41-14 win over visiting West Florida at Eagle Stadium, a venue where Robinson has celebrated countless playoff wins as an assistant coach and, of course, a state title as a dynamic two-way player in 1988, the Eagle alumnus was too caught up in the missed tackles and blocking struggles of the first half to acknowledge his first win as head coach.

The Niceville standard, he said bluntly, was not met. And he expects better next week against visiting Mosley, who enters the Sept. 4 matchup at Eagle Stadium with a three-game win streak in the rivalry.

Who were top performers from Week 1 of high school football season?

After he was done, legendary Niceville coach David Garner stepped in with the game ball. On a night when Deagan McCoy threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another, Malachi White had two highlight-reel touchdown receptions and the defense pitched a second-half shutout, the ball had only one destination: Robinson’s hands.

A once tense postgame huddle turned jubilant. Robinson struggled to fight back the tears.

“We didn’t play the way I wanted to, but it meant a lot to the kids as you can tell, and it meant a lot to … I mean, coach Garner’s my guy,” Robinson said. “Sometimes it’s not about you. It was my first win, but it wasn’t really about me. It’s about our team and where we’re trying to go.”

Where the Eagles are trying to go is subjective. But after a 6-4 down year where Niceville lost to Choctaw, Crestview and Mosley and didn’t win a playoff game, it starts with beating rivals. West Florida didn’t represent that, the Jaguars losing the week prior 52-7 to Walton, but Niceville needed a confidence boost after a 49-7 loss to a Prattville (Alabama) team no area team has any business playing.

The first half did not afford that.

“This is no disrespect to any team in the panhandle, no disrespect to any team in the country, but when you see a team like Prattville and you see them on film, no other team including ourselves, they just don’t look like the same,” Robinson shared. “That was a tough loss and tonight, I think we came out a little flat and we had to turn it up at halftime and get our guys’ attention a little bit. As I told the guys a second ago, we’ve been playing this game since we were 5 and 6 years old and it’s always been about blocking and tackling. We didn’t do a good job in the first half.”

Credit West Florida, who stacked the box, bullied Niceville’s offensive line and watched Barron Latson turn the corner on 62- and 53-yard touchdown runs to knot the score at 14 in the second half. West Florida’s commitment to stopping four-star Jakobe Gilyard opened up McCoy, who broke a 38-yard touchdown run and connected with Caleb Leonard on a 39-yard touchdown for the 14-all score. Finally before half, Gilyard was put into the wildcat and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Momentum was with the Eagles, who were set to receive the ball first in the second half, and a halftime intervention dialed in Kody Martin’s defense.

West Florida rushed for just 10 yards in the second half after Latson rushed for 153 in the first half alone. Unable to pick up yardage on the ground, the Visitors threw for just 52 yards and coughed up the ball twice. Their lone extended drive in the second half was assisted by Niceville penalties and ended with back-to-back tackles at the line of scrimmage from Tyler Sartori and August Ingermann, the latter meeting Latson head on and pushing him back two yards.

“They had certain plays where they were putting a lot of people on the line and we just checked to it,” Ingermann said. “We took a corner or two, added a couple of D-line guys and we just kept stopping the run.”

Meanwhile McCoy and the aerial attack feasted. The junior started the half with a connection to White, who tiptoed the right sideline 46 yards to paydirt. Then, after a Noah Renes tackle in the backfield on fourth down set up Eagles ball deep in Jaguars territory, McCoy found White for a 35-yard score in the right corner of the end zone.

“They had two safeties playing really low, so we took advantage of that and threw the deep ball tonight,” McCoy said.

McCoy finished the night 10 of 19 for 180 yards and three touchdowns and rushed six times for 53 yards and a score. Gilyard eventually found some space with 91 yards and a score on 25 touches, and Isaac Wyatt tacked on a 5-yard touchdown run to give him 51 rushing yards on four carries.

Now Mosley — fresh off falling to 4A in the offseason re-alignment — comes to town Friday, Sept. 4 for a non-district matchup at Eagle Stadium.

“I’m hyped,” said McCoy, who threw for 263 yards and three scores in last year’s 42-36 loss to Mosley. “This is by far the most exciting game of the season in my opinion. Last year was awesome, so much fun. And this time we want to win.”

“We’re going to turn it around this year,” Ingermann said. “I was telling everyone with like a minute left tonight, we gotta come out next game and play like we did in the second half.”

Robinson expects the best from Tommy Joe Whiddon’s crew, per usual.

“Mosley’s going to come ready to play. They always do,” Robinson said. “Coach Whiddon does a great job of preparing them and they’re going to be fired up. It’s historically been their Super Bowl, so we know they’re going to be ready to play.”
