NFLPA calls for full investigation into Eagles’ handling of Jalen Hurts

The NFL Players Association is pushing back against the league’s conclusion that the Eagles handled Jalen Hurts’ medical situation appropriately, calling for a full investigation before making judgments about the quarterback’s care.

In a statement Tuesday night, the union said it was unaware of any NFL investigation and that the league previously told it there were no plans to review Hurts’ treatment.

“The NFLPA is not aware of any NFL investigation into the medical care provided to Jalen Hurts,” the statement read. “In fact, the league previously informed the union that it did not plan to review the care he received.”

The union added that “there must be a full investigation into what occurred” before drawing conclusions about how the situation was handled.

The statement challenges the process behind the NFL’s public support for Philadelphia’s medical decisions. Earlier Tuesday, the league said it had remained in contact with the Eagles and medical personnel at the Cleveland Clinic in London and determined the situation was handled appropriately.

Hurts played against Jacksonville in Week 5 after being diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his left calf. Subsequent testing revealed deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both lungs. He is clinically stable and receiving blood thinners but is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

The NFLPA’s statement does not establish that medical personnel acted improperly. It does, however, make clear that the union considers a full examination necessary before accepting conclusions about the care Hurts received.

The distinction matters: The NFL has defended how it handled the situation, while the players’ union says it was told the league did not intend to investigate. The union also emphasized that establishing the facts is necessary to protect players and ensure they receive appropriate medical care going forward. Its statement calls for an investigation; it does not announce that one has begun.
