NFL Doctor Issues Graphic Warning on Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton’s Ankle Injury
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid admitted that “it doesn’t look good” after wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a severe left leg injury during Sunday’s 30-27 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Following the game, former NFL team physician Dr. David Chao reviewed the live broadcast footage and issued a warning on social media.

Just before the setback, Thornton caught a 55-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes while the Chiefs trailed 19-17. Raiders safety Treydan Stukes tackled him from behind. Thornton stood up to celebrate before the injury forced him back to the ground.
Chao, who describes himself as an ex-NFL head team doctor with 17-plus years of experience, posted his assessment Sunday night. He noted that Thornton’s foot position showed how serious the damage was, explaining that a dislocated ankle almost always comes with a bone break.
“It’s very hard to dislocate your ankle, near impossible, without there being a fracture,” Chao said in a video.
Chao also told viewers not to read the injury from Thornton’s first reaction. “Judge the injury, not reaction,” he wrote in his post. He described the footage as “somewhat graphic,” saying the ankle was “pointed west and the knee pointed north.”

However, the Chiefs have not announced an official diagnosis or timeline for Tyquan Thornton. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted the official update from team medical personnel, penning, “Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle that was put back into place by doctors earlier today. He did make the plane with the team. Thornton will have a full evaluation in the morning, along with a second opinion. Out indefinitely, but in good spirits.”
Reid said Thornton would fly back to Kansas City with the team for further evaluation, and outlets report he is out indefinitely. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes addressed the visual severity of the injury, saying, “First off, I’m just praying for him. You never want anyone to get injured and you’re hoping it’s better than it looked out there. Praying for him, hopefully he comes back healthy.”
Before his injury, Thornton recorded five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while wideout Rashee Rice also exited with a hamstring issue.
