Aaron Rodgers has signed up for one more year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, giving them some continuity at the position for the first time in years.

That stability will likely be short-lived, however, as Rodgers apparently intends to retire after next season.

Accordingly, the Steelers will likely need to find a new quarterback for 2027 and beyond. One name that’s been batted around recently is Baker Mayfield, who’s in the final year of his deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On Monday, PFT Live explained why Pittsburgh should pursue Mayfield next summer if he’s available.

“Baker Mayfield would be perfect in Pittsburgh. He would be perfect,” Mike Florio said. “I know they’d like to get off this train of older veteran quarterbacks, but he’s a spring chicken in comparison to Aaron Rodgers. I would make a beeline for Baker Mayfield. If I’m Mike McCarthy and I’m the Pittsburgh Steelers… I am doing whatever it takes to get Baker Mayfield to Pittsburgh.”

The Steelers already know Mayfield well from his four seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He’s only gotten better since joining the Buccaneers, making two Pro Bowls in his three seasons with them.

His numbers declined last season, however, and he’ll be 32 next year, so Pittsburgh may want to see if he bounces back this year before making a run at him in free agency next offseason.
