NFC East gains another star receiver as Stefon Diggs joins Washington

Stefon Diggs is returning home and joining the NFC East.

The Washington Commanders signed the veteran wide receiver to a one-year contract worth up to $12 million, adding a proven target to the offense surrounding Jayden Daniels. Diggs gives Washington an accomplished receiver who has surpassed 1,000 yards seven times during his NFL career. He spent last season with the New England Patriots and helped them reach the Super Bowl before entering free agency.

Unlike the previous offseason, when Diggs was recovering from a torn ACL suffered during his final season in Houston, the 32-year-old has enjoyed a fully healthy preparation period. That should allow him to begin working with Daniels immediately rather than spending the summer completing rehabilitation.

The Commanders have aggressively reworked the talent around their quarterback. Tight end Chig Okonkwo and receiver Antonio Williams joined an offense that also includes Terry McLaurin, Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey and Treylon Burks. Diggs provides route-running experience and a dependable option against man coverage. He can move between the slot and perimeter, giving Washington another player capable of creating favorable matchups on important downs.

The signing is also meaningful for Diggs, who was born in Maryland, attended Our Lady of Good Counsel and played collegiately for the Terrapins before Minnesota selected him in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Washington is betting that Diggs still has enough explosiveness to complement its younger receivers without requiring him to carry the passing offense. For the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants, the assignment became more difficult. Daniels has another veteran target, and Diggs has returned to the region where his football career began.
