Newcastle United suffer major transfer blow as midfielder rejects Magpies move

Newcastle United’s search for a new midfield leader has suffered another setback, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg turning down the chance to return to the Premier League at St James’ Park.

The 31-year-old had emerged as one of Newcastle’s preferred options following an extraordinary summer of change.

Bruno Guimarães has completed a £75 million move to Arsenal, while Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham for £100m, leaving new head coach Matthias Jaissle needing significant reinforcements in the middle of the pitch.

Højbjerg appeared to offer an experienced and relatively affordable solution, but the Denmark international has decided his future remains at Marseille.

Højbjerg has rejected Newcastle United

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle were prepared to meet Marseille’s valuation for Højbjerg after identifying him as a potential replacement for Guimarães.

However, the former Tottenham and Southampton midfielder ultimately rejected the opportunity because he wants to remain with Marseille.

Højbjerg’s Premier League experience had made him an attractive option.

He has accumulated more than 250 appearances in England’s top flight and would have brought leadership to a Newcastle midfield that has suddenly become considerably younger following the departures of Guimarães and Tonali.

The Magpies will now need to explore alternatives. The Guardian reported that Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha is another player Newcastle have considered, although Aston Villa are also interested in the Portugal international.

Pressure increases on the Magpies

Missing out on Højbjerg is not disastrous in isolation, but it becomes more concerning when viewed alongside Newcastle’s wider summer.

Jaissle has inherited a squad undergoing enormous change. Losing Guimarães and Tonali for a combined £175m gives Newcastle considerable financial room, but money is only useful if the club can convince the right players to join.

Højbjerg would have been a short-term solution rather than a transformative signing, so Newcastle should not panic simply because he said no. At 31, committing heavily to him would also have offered limited resale value.

Palhinha now looks like an obvious alternative, although Villa’s interest complicates that route.

Newcastle could also decide to change direction entirely and target someone younger who can become part of the midfield for several seasons.
