New York Giants have 'some hope' Brian Burns injury isn't season-ending

The New York Giants left a rainy 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans with a 2-1 record and a phrase that already feels too familiar around here.

Brian Burns, already playing on a sprained left ankle that kept him out of practice all week, went down with a right knee injury with just over 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

The 28-year-old edge rusher was a surprise active and was used mainly on pass-rush snaps when his knee buckled as he charged into the backfield. He punched the MetLife Stadium turf, then needed help from teammates Aaron Stinnie and Andrew Thomas to leave the field without putting much weight on the right leg. Trainers took him straight to the locker room.

Burns has not missed a game since the Giants acquired him in 2024, a 36-start streak that survived Monday night’s ankle sprain in Los Angeles. Last season he posted a career-high 16.5 sacks. New York’s pass rush entered Sunday with one sack through two games.

Head coach John Harbaugh said after the game that imaging was the next step.

“And then Brian Burns will get an MRI hopefully tonight. We’re trying to get that scheduled for tonight. There is some hope there, but we won’t know until we see the MRI,” he said.

The Giants offered a similar note of hope last week after Jaxson Dart’s knee injury. That one ended with season-ending damage and a Friday surgery.

Until Burns’ pictures arrive, the club is asking everyone to wait and see. Giants fans have heard that line before.
