New Report Boosts NY Giants’ Chances of Joey Porter Jr. Trade Soon, Details Huge Cost of a Deal

A new rumor seemingly boosts the New York Giants‘ chances of making a Joey Porter Jr. trade soon and also details the huge cost of a potential deal.

New York entered the 2026 NFL campaign with a beat-up cornerback group, and things only got worse following their Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys. On Friday, the Giants announced Paulson Adebo was placed on injured reserve. The veteran corner will now miss at least the next four games and joins fellow cornerbacks Thaddeus Dixon, Jarrick Bernard-Converse, Korie Black, and Rico Payton on the IR.

The Giants now head into a tough matchup with a high-powered Los Angeles Rams offense with a very thin cornerback room. New York, obviously, needs to add meaningful depth to its secondary. A player who has been linked to them even before Adebo’s injury is disgruntled Pittsburgh Steelers corner Joey Porter Jr., one of the better CBs in the AFC.

However, it would seem like a bunch of teams would jump at the chance to add a stud player at a premium position. But it seems like the G-Men don’t have a ton of competition in a potential trade for the 26-year-old, according to a new report from The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones.

“Surveying the league the past two weeks, it has been difficult to find a potential taker for Porter at that price, this early in the season,” Jones wrote. But what is the current price for the talented young corner?

“An acquiring team would likely need to be willing to part with a Day 2 pick and pay Porter a deal averaging somewhere in the mid-20s per year, at the very least,” Jones reports. Such a deal would make Porter Jr. one of the ten highest-paid CBs in the NFL despite never earning Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors in his first two seasons.

Such a price is one that one AFC executive told the NFL insider is probably too high to pay for Porter Jr. “That’s a double whammy. You would send a pick to pay [Christian Gonzalez] or [Patrick Surtain II] or [Derek Stingley Jr.]. I don’t know about Porter,” the executive said.

The Giants have just over $12 million in cap space. If they can send linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux — a player linked to trade rumors for a couple of years — back in a deal, that might open up the space to give Porter Jr. the extension he is looking for.

While it may be an overpay, he would be a major addition to a talented defense and could help make the Giants a serious NFC East title contender in 2026.
