New Avengers: Doomsday Video Confirms Major Channing Tatum Gambit Change
A new Avengers: Doomsday video gives fans an exciting look at a Gambit change.
Gambit is one of the most popular X-Men characters, but he was not part of Fox’s original X-Men movie timeline. After years of trying to make a Gambit solo movie happen, to no success, Channing Tatum finally got to play the Marvel hero in the MCU after Ryan Reynolds brought Remy LeBeau into Deadpool & Wolverine. Tatum’s Gambit was the MCU movie’s breakout character, leading to Marvel quickly working on how he could return to the franchise. That will happen just two years later, with Tatum part of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast alongside returning Fox X-Men stars, and a major change has been confirmed.
A new Avengers: Doomsday commercial for Dunkin’ Donuts gives fans the first look at Gambit’s updated accent.
Tatum famously went overboard with Gambit’s signature Cajun accent in Deadpool & Wolverine to up its comedic effect, which worked, as Gambit is perhaps the most quotable character in the MCU movie, having plenty of hilarious moments. However, to match the darker tone of Avengers: Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom entering the picture and a multiversal crisis in sight, Tatum has dialed back Gambit’s accent. As he talks to the Fantastic Four’s robot, H.E.R.B.I.E., in the new video, Tatum’s Gambit is much easier to understand.

Besides stripping down his accent, it seems like Avengers: Doomsday might also be changing Gambit’s powers in some form. While the X-Men hero has always been powerful, Avengers: Doomsday‘s trailers show him fighting and holding back Shang-Chi’s Ten Rings, weapons that rank quite high on the MCU’s power scale. Another major element to Tatum’s return as Gambit in the upcoming MCU movie relates to his origin. While he appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine, Gambit was already in the Void, with his universe of origin not being revealed in the R-rated MCU movie. Avengers: Doomsday will see Remy with Fox’s original X-Men.
As such, since actors like James Marsden as Cyclops and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier were announced to return for the first Avengers movie of the Multiverse Saga, the prevailing theory has been that Tatum’s Gambit hails from the same universe as those heroes. Well, speaking to ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley for the launch of the Avengers: Doomsday special menu at Dunkin’ Donuts, Tatum confirmed just that, claiming that his version of Gambit comes from the same Fox timeline as the returning X-Men stars, though the actor notes that there is some “gray around it.”

Also speaking to ScreenRant, Tatum addressed the chances of his Gambit solo movie finally being made in the MCU after his upcoming return in December’s Avengers: Doomsday. According to the Marvel actor, he is fighting for that to happen and would love to get to lead a Gambit movie. That said, after noting the tumultuous process of locking down a director for the failed Gambit film, Tatum’s condition for it to happen is that they secure a “very, very good director to realize it.” It remains to be seen how big of a role Tatum’s Gambit will have on Avengers: Doomsday.
