The Preview

Welcome to the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off between Nebraska and Providence.

Going into the game both teams are 1-0. Nebraska opened up with a 42 point win over Le Moyne while Providence beat Maine by 27 points.

At this point we still do not know what kind of team Fred Hoiberg is going to have this season. Throughout the exhibition schedule, Hoiberg used different lineups and played a lot of the players who they probably hope that they will not have to depend on in the 2026-2027 season.

In the opener against Le Moyne the minutes were spread out again in a way that we likely will not see against Providence. Braden Frager, Cale Jacobsen and Pryce Sandfort played around 25-27 minutes. I will be keeping an eye on the amount of minutes Jacob Lanier will play going forward. Against Le Moyne he played 23 minutes but I wonder if that is Hoiberg using that game as an opportunity to give the true freshman some experience.

It is likely that the matchup with Providence will give us a real good look at what we should expect in Big Ten play as far as the rotations go.

The Providence head coach is Bryan Hodgson who is in his first year with the Friars. He was the head coach of South Florida last season. Last season he was the American Conference Coach of the Year as they went 25-9.

Providence and Hodgson try and play an up-tempo approach on offense. They are relying on Jacob Bannarbie, a transfer from UNLV, and Miles Byrd who won the Mountain West Defensive Player of the year last season when he was at San Diego State. I expect Byrd will be tasked with chasing Pryce Sandfort around on the court.

Here is the Full Preview from the Athletic Department:

Scouting Providence
Providence comes into Saturday’s matchup with a 1-0 record after its win over Maine on Monday. The Friars turned nearly its entire roster, as junior guard Ryan Mela (9.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg in 2025-26) and John Jackson (redshirt) are the only returnees from last season’s team which finished with a 15-18 in 2025-26. The newcomers are led by San Diego State transfer Miles Byrd (10.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg), Northwestern transfer Arrinten Page (10.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Georgetown transfer Malik Mack (13.6 ppg, 4.1 apg). The Friars made a late addition to their roster last week in Maryland transfer Elijah Saunders (9.0 ppg, 4.4 apg). In the opener, UNLV transfer Jacob Bannarbie came off the bench and had 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting and 10 rebounds in the win over Maine.

Bryan Hodgson is in his first season at Providence after guiding South Florida to a 25-9 record and a sweep of the American Conference regular-season and postseason tournament titles in 2025-26. Previously he was a at Arkansas State for two seasons, guiding the Red Wolves to one NIT and a CBI appearance. Before taking the Arkansas State job, he was an assistant at Alabama from 2019 to 2023 and also was with Nate Oats at Bufffalo from 2015 to 2019.

Saturday will mark the first meeting between the two schools. The Huskers are 39-48 (.448) all-time against the Big East, including 1-0 last season with a win over Creighton. Nebraska has three Big East opponents on its non-conference schedule, including matchups against Butler in Chicago (Nov. 22) and at Creighton (Dec. 5).
