NANS Secures Release of Detained Polytechnic Ibadan Students, Commends EFCC
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has secured the release of all detained students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, following an intervention by the association to ensure that the affected students participate in their ongoing examinations.
The intervention was led by the National Financial Secretary of NANS, Comrade Alao John Oluwadamilola, alongside the Student Union President of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Comrade Fagbemi Nurudeen Ojo, and other members of the students’ union cabinet.
The NANS leadership engaged relevant authorities after receiving concerns over the detention of the students, with the intervention primarily aimed at protecting their academic interests.
According to the association, the students’ detention could have jeopardised their academic progress, particularly as examinations were ongoing and the affected students had prepared to sit for them.
Following the engagement, all the detained students were released, allowing them to return to the institution and participate in their examinations.
NANS commended the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), particularly the Zonal Director, ACE I Haauwa Garba Ringim, for its understanding and consideration of the students’ academic interests.
The association said the development demonstrated the importance of constructive engagement between student leadership and security and law-enforcement agencies.
While acknowledging the need for legitimate investigations and the continued fight against financial crimes, NANS urged that such processes should, where possible, be handled in a manner that does not unnecessarily disrupt students’ education and academic progression.
The association also appreciated the management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and other individuals who contributed to the release of the students and their return to their examinations.
NANS President, Distinguished Comrade Akinteye Babatunde GCNS, was said to remain committed to defending the legitimate interests and welfare of Nigerian students through dialogue, engagement and other lawful means.
The statement was signed by Comrade Kamaldeen Ilias A., also known as The Global Kamal, Chief Press Secretary, Office of the National Financial Secretary, NANS.
