MobLand's Latest Shocking Death Officially Reverses An Entire Character Arc
The latest episode of Tom Hardy’s MobLand has proven once again that this exhilarating gangster thriller isn’t going to pull any punches when it comes to gobsmacking plot twists. But the death which occurs at the end of “A Different Corner” goes one step further, effectively reversing an entire character arc, as well as leaving viewers stunned.
There’s now no way back for a MobLand character who’s been conflicted since the very start of the series. Given her latest move, she has no choice but to take the path she’s resisted for the best part of two seasons. It was the show’s previous episode, “Birdland”, when Jan Da Souza first became suspicious of her new boyfriend, Donnie.
We could never have predicted that just one hour of television later these suspicions would lead to Donnie’s demise, and by Jan’s own hand, no less. If Tom Hardy warned us about a change to Harry Da Souza in MobLand season 2, then the sudden transformation in Jan’s character caught us cold.
For the whole of season 2 prior to this episode, Jan had been trying to get away from Harry and his life of crime. Indeed, she saw her budding relationship with Donnie as a chance to make a fresh start, far removed from the criminal underworld in which her husband operates. We saw a glimpse of her erratic tendencies in the climactic scene of season 1, but nothing could have prepared us for what she does to Donnie.
Jan’s Shocking Murder Of Donnie In MobLand Completely Changes Her Character Arc

If Jan accidentally stabbing her husband Harry during an argument in MobLand‘s season 1 finale was a harbinger of things to come, the show hasn’t treated it as such. Harry’s characteristically calm and measured response to the incident has been followed up in season 2 with a darkly hilarious scene in which the pair discuss it during a marriage counselling session.
Meanwhile, Jan has been attempting to distance herself from Harry as much as possible in this second season, after the apparent breakdown in their marriage that culminated in the stabbing incident. Her relationship with Donnie seems to have made her happy, despite his duplicitous ulterior motive for getting together with her. Even though she’s been warned by Harry that Donnie is manipulating her, she’s turned a blind eye to his concerns.
That is, until the fifth episode of MobLand season 2, when she notices missed calls from Seraphina Harrigan on Donnie’s phone. Still, while this discovery naturally arouses Jan’s suspicions, it doesn’t necessarily lead to the shocking ending of episode 6.
Having told Harry she plans to have nothing more to do with him, Jan shows Donnie up after they agree to meet. Instead, she secretly follows him home, and shoots him dead. It’s a stunning turn of events that no one could have predicted, which leaves Jan in a very different situation from the one she’s been trying to create for herself throughout this season so far.
MobLand Season 2 Will See Jan Rely On Harry And His Crimes Like Never Before

Far from getting away from Harry and his life of crime, Jan has just tied herself to her husband’s line of work in a way that’s impossible to escape. Actor Joanne Froggatt hinted at her involvement in Harry’s gangland activities in MobLand season 2 during an interview over a year ago, and this suggestion may well now come to pass.
Jan has committed murder in cold blood, and surely the only way she can both evade the prying eyes of the authorities and avoid retribution from Donnie’s criminal associates is to cling to Harry and the Harrigans for protection. For the first time in the series, she could well and truly become her husband’s partner in crime.
Nothing is certain at this stage, especially in light of the last phone call Jan had with Harry, in which she threatened to commit suicide if he contacted her again. At the same time, there’s no doubt that her MobLand character arc has been completely reversed in an instant, and she’s entered the real world of Harry Da Souza, whether she likes it or not.
