MLB proposes radical rules change, including one that went extinct in 1961

Major League Baseball announced a slew of proposals Thursday, Oct. 8 that would radically alter the regular season and postseason.

Among the key points:

• A 154-game regular season, which hasn’t been in play since 1961 (in the National League) and 1960 (in the American League)

• A best-of-seven division series round, up from a best-of-five

• Higher-seeded clubs in the Wild Card and Division Series would be able to select their opponents before each round. For example, the number-3 seed would select whether to play the number-5 seed or number-6 seed. The number-1 seed in each league would pick which wild-card round winner it would play once the round is complete.

The proposals were framed in conjunction with the implementation of a salary cap and salary floor, which the league wants to introduce once the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires on Dec. 1.
